All About Smoker’s Lines

As we age, we produce less collagen. This means that we lose the smooth, taut skin that we enjoyed in our youth. Think about it: our lips are always moving. We use them to express our emotions, kiss, converse, pout – they are almost constantly in motion! Sadly, these things cause our lips to show signs of ageing early, through the development of the wrinkles often referred to as smoker’s lines.

What Are Smoker’s Lines?

Smoker’s lines, or lipstick lines, are colloquial terms used to describe the vertical fine lines and wrinkles that form around the mouth. Despite these names, these imperfections typically have nothing to do with either smoking or lipstick (although smoking certainly does age the skin in general).

Why Do We Get Smoker’s Lines?

Unfortunately, we get smoker’s lines for the same reason that we develop any other fine lines and wrinkles – the natural ageing process. Of course, a number of lifestyle choices can accelerate this process, smoking included, but this will affect the entirety of the skin, not just the mouth specifically.

A good moisturiser and the daily use of SPF are great ways to minimise smoker’s lines, however, they cannot prevent them entirely. What’s more, many of us leave these protective interventions too late to be effective.

How Can Smoker’s Lines Be Corrected?

There are two different ways that we can treat smoker’s lines at Imperial Aesthetics – Tixel® or Fillers.

Tixel® – Tixel® is a revolutionary treatment that can be used to treat an extensive array of skin problems, including acne scarring, rosacea, and uneven skin tone and texture. The procedure works by administering advanced fractional thermal energy to the skin via a hand-held device with a medical-grade titanium tip and tiny pyramid-shaped pins. This stimulates your natural collagen production, which helps to plump, smooth and rejuvenate the skin.

Fillers – An alternative way to minimise the appearance of lines is with Fillers. Lip Fillers are most frequently used to add volume to the lips and correct asymmetry, however, they are also a fantastic way to reduce and/or remove fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
