5 things that could be causing your jowls to appear

With nearly all of us experiencing jowls later in life, it’s no wonder we are looking at ways to reduce and remove their appearance entirely! This month, Imperial Aesthetics takes a deep dive into jowls, what they are, why they appear and most importantly, the steps you can take to reduce their appearance, including jawline augmentation and our incredible tixel treatment.

What are jowls, and how can I delay them?

Do you feel like you have woken up only to see you suddenly have an excess of sagging skin around your jawline? Commonly known as jowls, this sagging skin can give us a real appearance of ageing and, as well as being unsightly, can leave us with a lack of confidence and an overall feeling of getting old before our time.

Our bodies produce collagen that keeps our skin looking firm, tight and youthful in appearance. As many of us know, over time, our collagen production reduces, leaving us with fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin and, yes, you guessed it – jowls! It is worth noting that jowls are a natural sign of the ageing process, and almost everyone will develop them as they get older.

If you are already dealing with the appearance of jowls, aesthetics intervention with a trained practitioner is a good way of reducing the appearance of your sagging skin. Invasive treatments such as neck lifts can tighten your skin and make it look less saggy. Non-invasive treatments include Tixel®, peels, and lasers can boost the collagen production in your skin, helping it to look firmer, tighter and more youthful.

For those of you who have not yet faced the additional sagging skin around your jawline, you may be looking for ways to prevent them from occurring in the future. Luckily, there are several ways you could prevent or reduce the likelihood of having jowls in the future:

Avoiding smoking – the chemicals found in cigarettes and tobacco products damage your skin.

Limiting your sun exposure – UV rays damage our skin, so wear sunscreen throughout the year.

Limiting your screen time – Avoid being hunched over or stretched out when working from or watching a screen, and take regular breaks.

This month, Imperial Aesthetics takes a look at everything you need to know about jowls, what could be causing your jowls to appear and how we can help you reduce or even completely remove the sagging skin from your face!

5 things that could cause jowls

Sagging skin around the cheeks and jawline is one of the most common signs of ageing, causing many women to seek out cosmetic surgery to reverse the effects. However, jowls don’t have to be inevitable! There are a few things you can do to prevent them or get rid of them if you already have them. Here are five common causes and ways to address them.

Sunlight

Too much time in the sun can break down the collagen and elastin in your skin, leading to premature ageing and skin damage. It’s important to limit your exposure to the sun and to always wear sunscreen or moisturiser with SPF – even in winter.

Technology

We’re spending more time than ever staring at screens, and it’s taking a toll on our posture and health. By looking down at our phones and laptops all day, we’re increasing our chances of developing jowls and “tech neck”. This can cause serious pain in the neck and back. To avoid these problems, we need to take breaks from screens and make sure we’re standing up straight.

Ageing

As we age, our skin’s production of vital proteins like collagen and elastin starts to decline. This breakdown of proteins leads to sagging skin and, over time, can cause things like jowls. Once we hit 20, our bodies produce about 1% less collagen every year, making our skin thinner and more fragile.

Smoking

We all know that smoking is bad for our health, but did you know that it can also cause jowls? Just like the sun, smoking can damage your body’s natural collagen and elastin levels, and it also tightens your blood vessels, meaning less blood flow and oxygen to your face and skin.

Genetics

Some women, unfortunately, have a skin type or facial structure that is more susceptible to developing jowls than others. While most of us will experience some skin laxity and sagging as we age, some women are blessed with genes that mean they are less likely to form jowls. So if you’re lucky enough not to have to worry about jowls, thank your parents!

How to treat the appearance of jowls

If you have had enough of your sagging skin and want to get it gone, Imperial Aesthetics can help you to achieve a natural, glowing look that you can have confidence in on a daily basis. There are a number of treatments we can provide to help you reduce the appearance of jowls and be proud of a more defined jawline.

Jawline Augmentation

Suitable for both men and women, jaw augmentation can help to create contour, define your jawline and reduce the appearance of sagging jowls with natural-looking, subtle results.

Unlike a traditional facelift, by using dermal fillers, we can help you to achieve your desired results without taking time off work or undergoing a general anaesthetic. Whether you wish to soften your jawline for a more feminine appearance or opt for a more chiselled and defined jaw, our jaw augmentation treatment can help to restore lost volume for a refreshed look without the need to go under the knife.

Jaw augmentation is ideal if you’re looking for a safe treatment with minimal pain that will enhance and lift your natural features and last up to 12 months. If you would like more information about jaw augmentation, look at our frequently asked questions.

Tixel® Treatment

Experience an innovative, revolutionary, and non-invasive way to refresh, rejuvenate, restore your skin, and say hello to a glowing, youthful, vibrant, and revitalised complexion.

Designed to leave skin looking smoother, firmer, and more radiant, our innovative Tixel® treatment uses heat to naturally boost collagen to improve tone, texture, and overall skin quality. With minimal downtime compared to traditional therapies and results that last up to 24 months, it’s the ideal lunchtime treatment you’ve been waiting for!

Post-treatment cream

Whilst using creams and serums alone without treatment will not reduce the appearance of sagging skin, if you are looking to prolong your treatment effects, Imperial Aesthetics recommends its Teoxane Advanced Filler Cream featured on our online store. If used regularly post-treatment, your results will be long-lasting. The Advanced Filler Cream, available for normal to combination skin and dry skin, is a hydrating and lifting cream that promotes firmness and consistent hydration in the skin.
